Chillers are one of the most important equipment among the HVAC systems. These are commonly used in hotels, hospitals, restaurants, and industrial plants. Chillers are used to provide cooling for large spaces and production lines where the cooling from an air conditioner could not suffice. Typically, a chiller removes heat through various refrigeration systems. This cooling equipment lowers the temperature of pieces of machinery, industrial spaces, and in-process fluids by removing the heat from the system and transferring it into an external environment.
Uses of Chillers
The source of heat in an industrial set up usually comes from the friction, high-powered equipment, ovens, and furnaces, and ovens. The role of chillers in an industrial environment is to increase the lifespan of heavy-duty equipment. A chiller circulates a coolant (e.g. refrigerant or water) through the equipment to maintain its operational efficiency and productivity.
Metal Processing/ Plating:
High heat is usually associated with the processes in the metal plating industry. Some of the processes are the high-temperature electroplating and electroless plating. The bonding of the coating on the bare metal produces high temperatures and will require cooling. The chillers are used in this process to remove the heat from the plated metal to avoid changing the property of a metal caused by extreme temperature.
The two main objectives of using a chiller in this industry are to protect the equipment and protect the finished product. Plastic is a heat-sensitive material. Its mechanical properties can be damaged when exposed to extreme heat, and this is the reason why plastics need to be cooled accordingly. In the plastic injection industry, the quality of the plastic part will be significantly affected by the temperature of the mold. Chillers are used for providing a cooling bath to maintain the mechanical properties and quality of plastic products.
Chillers in a manufacturing shop floor are used for keeping the temperature down to the proper working temperature to protect employee’s safety. The extreme heat produced from the full operation of different equipment will create an undesirable atmosphere that is unsuitable for a working environment. Depending on the building layout, chillers can be installed either on top of the building or inside the building.
The food industry has high standards and strict regulations regarding maintaining the proper temperature in the processing plant, storage, and transportation. Chillers provide the cooling medium through the cooling coils to keep the food products within its controlled temperature.
Sophisticated types of Medical equipment are required to be in a temperature-controlled environment. These types of equipment (e.g. MRI scanners, CT scanners, and LINAC machines) produce heat that might disrupt their functionality and accuracy. Chillers provide a reliable source of cooling to maintain and ensure the efficiency of these pieces of medical equipment.
The manufacturing process in making medicines requires a temperature-controlled environment. Unstable temperatures would impair the quality of the medicine. Chillers used in the pharmaceutical industry provide a precise and accurate cooling that is suitable for this application.
The internal processes within a laser engraving machine can produce extreme heat. The heat produced is detrimental to the functionality of the equipment as a whole. The perfect solution for avoiding these effects is to use a specialized chiller meant for laser machines that will cool the equipment.
Energy Generation Plants:
Power plants generate an enormous deal of heat during the whole process of producing electrical power. Chillers in this type of environment work by absorbing the heat generated by the components through the processes.
Chillers work by the same principle of removing heat, but there are specialized varieties of these pieces of equipment available. There are many types of chillers made to suit any industry from power plants, food industry, medical industry, and fabrication industries.
