Laser Cutters in Education: What You Need To Know

Laser systems used in education are typically classified under internationally recognised laser safety standards.

Most classroom-ready machines fall into Class 1, meaning they are fully enclosed and safe to operate during normal use without specialist protective equipment. Open or modified systems may fall into higher classes, requiring additional controls, supervision, and risk assessments in accordance with Health and Safety Executive guidance.

For UK schools, compliance involves more than just machine classification.

Proper extraction and filtration systems are required to remove fumes and particulates, particularly when working with materials such as acrylic or wood. Machines must be CE or UKCA marked, and schools should carry out documented risk assessments, ensure appropriate staff training, and implement clear operating procedures.

Supervision is essential, and access should be restricted to trained users where necessary.

With the right infrastructure and knowledge in place, laser cutters become powerful tools for design, engineering, and STEM learning, enabling students to develop practical skills in a controlled and secure environment.

Steve Cockerham, Managing Director at HPC Laser, takes an honest and practical look at some of the most common questions education customers have when purchasing their first laser cutter for a school, college, or university. Read this post if you’re not sure what to look for in a laser cutter.

Are you new to the world of laser cutting and wondering how laser cutting machines work? Laser technologies are very complex, and can be explained in equally complicated ways. This post aims to explain the basics of laser cutting functionality in Layman’s terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

We appreciate buying a laser cutter for educational use can be a daunting process with many questions along the way. Below you’ll find some of the answers to questions we regularly receive from customers. If you can’t find an answer to your question, please just contact one of our laser experts.

Is it safe for students to use?

Yes—when properly supervised and with safety measures in place. Most school-friendly machines have enclosed designs, interlocks, and fume extraction systems. Students should always be trained and monitored by staff.

What age group are laser cutters suitable for?

Typically:

  • Primary: Teacher-led demonstrations
  • Secondary: Supervised student use
  • Further education: Independent use after training

What software do students need to use?

Most machines work with design software such as:

  • Vector programs (e.g., Illustrator, Inkscape)
  • CAD tools for precise designs
  • Lightburn

Some machines come with their own easy-to-use software or are compatible with a wide range of third party laser cutting software options.

How does it fit into the curriculum?

Laser cutters support multiple subjects:

  • Design & Technology (prototyping, manufacturing)
  • Art (engraving designs)
  • STEM (engineering concepts, CAD)

How much space do we need?

You’ll need:

  • A dedicated workspace (like a DT lab or makerspace)
  • Ventilation or extraction system
  • Stable table or stand
  • Nearby power supply

What materials can we use?

Common school-safe materials include:

  • Plywood and MDF
  • Acrylic (not all types)
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Leather and fabric

Some materials (like PVC or vinyl) must NEVER be used because they release toxic fumes.
